Frequently Asked Questions

The answers to some commoly asked Pilates questions. If you have a question that is not answered below please call Liz on 07889 152 808 or email liz@synergypilates.co.uk to discuss.

1. What should I wear?

Comfortable loose clothing such as tracksuits, T-shirts, leggings and other sportswear is ideal. You will want to make sure that you are not restricted by your clothing and feel comfortable. Please wear socks to classes.

2. I have a medical condition – can I still participate?

It depends on the condition but due to the versatile and low impact nature of Pilates it is probable that Pilates will be safe for you to do and might even help improve your condition. However to be sure you will need to provide Synergy Pilates with full details of your condition and may need to check with your GP before starting classes. You will need to include this information on the medical form provided when registering and keep Synergy Pilates updated on any changes in your condition.

3. I am pregnant – is Pilates okay for me to do?

Unless advised otherwise by your doctor or there are complications then attending a Pilates class should be a safe and beneficial method of exercise for you. However you will need to tell Synergy Pilates before your first class so that any contraindications can be taken into account.

4. Should I bring anything with me?

All mats and small equipment (balls, bands etc) are provided for you by Synergy Pilates. You may find it useful to bring a small bottle of water with you to classes.

5. Will Pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates is more likely to have an impact on your shape – toning and streamlining your appearance rather than your weight. However it can support weight loss along with a healthy diet and aerobic exercise such as swimming or cycling. Hopefully the classes will help you to feel more comfortable with your body based on a more toned muscle system and an improved mind-body connection. When registering you will be asked your goals and aspirations for the programme – we will then be able to tailor teaching to suit this (especially in a one-to-one scenario) and can discuss with you on a regular basis how we both feel you are progressing.

6. What happens if I miss a group matclass session and I have paid for my block of six in advance?

In order to take account of holidays and other commitments clients have in their lives clients have a block of seven class weeks within which to take their six sessions. If you have a private class scheduled and you are unable to attend please provide 24 hours notice, failure to do so would mean that you will have to be charged for the class in full.

7. Do I need to fill in the medical information on the form?

It is absolutely essential that this part of the registration form is completed and that you keep us up to date with any changes in your health. The information provided to Synergy Pilates will be treated as confidential and will simply be used to allow us to provide a safe, fulfilling and tailored class to you. If you have any medication such as inhalers or angina pills then please bring them with you to each class.

8. How long will it take before I notice the effects?

This will differ from person to person but you will get out at much as you put in – attending more classes or private classes is likely to have the fastest results. As a general guide you should start ‘getting it’ and begin to feel it in your body within 4 sessions – and from 8 sessions you may start seeing the results. As with anything incorporating some of the principles into your everyday life will help to release faulty muscle patterns and create new ones.
